Medicine is one of the most challenging and competitive fields of study, requiring dedication, resilience, and a passion for helping others. Here’s what you need to know about pursuing a medical degree in Australia as an international student
Pathway to Becoming a doctor
Undergraduate Entry (Direct Entry)
Bachelor of Medical Science or Bachelor of Medical Studies/Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): For students who have completed Year 12 or equivalent with outstanding academic results, some Australian universities offer direct entry into a combined undergraduate medical program. These programs generally take 5 to 6 years to complete.
Admission Tests: Entry into these programs often requires achieving high scores in the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) or, for some universities, a separate selection process.
Graduate Entry
Bachelor’s Degree: For those who do not enter directly into medicine, an alternative pathway involves completing a 3-year undergraduate degree, typically in a related field like Biomedical Science, Health Sciences, or any other discipline, followed by entry into a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.
GAMSAT/MCAT: To enter the MD program, students must clear the GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test) or MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), both of which assess knowledge and skills in science, reasoning, and communication.
Doctor of Medicine (MD)
Duration: The MD program typically spans 4 years, during which students receive extensive training in medical sciences, clinical skills, and patient care.
Clinical Placements: The program includes comprehensive clinical placements across various specialties such as general practice, surgery, pathology, paediatrics, and internal medicine, providing hands-on experience in real healthcare settings.
